Joe Gilmore Quillen
Joe Gilmore Quillen, 92, of Greenup, Kentucky went to be with the Lord on Friday May 3, 2019 at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Kentucky. Mr. Quillen was born November 16, 1926 in York, Kentucky a son of the late David Crockett and Mettie Alice Miller Quillen.
Joe was a United State World War II Army veteran. He was a member of Greenup First Baptist Church and became a Sunday school teacher in 1963 teaching the Young Adult Men class. Joe was the owner and operator of Quillen’s Service station for 59 years. “The Station” was known as “The Circle of Knowledge”. Some say you can learn all you need to know there. It’s where all of the locals gathered in Greenup to tell their stories and discuss current events. Years ago it was a first job for several local men.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by five brothers Harley Quillen, Bill Quillen, Elby Quillen, Wesley Quillen, and Herston Quillen; five sisters Argetta Alexander, Margaret DeHart, Flora Borowski, Lorine Barker, and Helen Louise Reed.
He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years Ella Juanita Hieneman Quillen; two sons Tim (Rhonda) Quillen, Kentucky and Tony (Debra) Quillen, Kentucky; one daughter Susan Quillen all of Lloyd, Kentucky; five grandchildren Brian Quillen, Stephen Quillen, Henry Quillen, Alexandra Quillen, and Abigail Quillen; two step-grandchildren Chandler Dickson and Grant Dickson; three great grandchildren Mariah Quillen, Tyler Joseph Quillen, and Garrett Quillen; Honorary son Joe E. Coldiron of Lloyd, Kentucky.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Sunday May 5, 2019 at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup, Kentucky by Dr. Tom Melvin and Terry Fyffe. Burial will be in Brick Union Cemetery in Lloyd, Kentucky. Military Rites will be performed by Marine Corp League Greenbo Detachment #1345.
