Freida Ruth White Harmon

Freida Ruth White Harmon, 98, of Greenup, KY passed away on October 15, 2024. She was born on June 21, 1926, in Catlettsburg, KY, the daughter of Joe and Cora Bell Opell White. She graduated from Boyd County High School in 1944. In addition to her parents, Freida was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, G.K. Harmon, Jr., her two brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul and Thelma White, and Elwood and Robert White, her son-in-law, Dan Cooksey, and a special friend, Jim Benson. She was also predeceased by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Harold and Virginia Harmon, Walter Harmon, French Harmon, Clyde and Gladys Harmon, Ellis and Alene Harmon, Ira Harmon, Raymond Harmon, Roy Harmon, Virginia Lyon, and Norma White, and a veritable menagerie of beloved cats and dogs.

Freida's survivors include her two daughters, Ann Cooksey of Flatwoods, KY, and Pamela Rice and husband, Mickey Rice of Summit, KY, and her grandson, Joe Rice of Brooklyn, NY. Additional survivors include three sisters-in-law, Mary Harmon, Helen Harmon, and Amy Thompson, a host of nieces and nephews, and her long-time best friend, Ann Townsend.

Freida was a wonderful homemaker and cook. She was famously known for her homemade butterscotch pies which she took to the families of friends who had passed away. The pies were called her "Funeral Pies," and, having lived such a long life, she witnessed many deaths and made many, many pies!

Freida was a great supporter of her daughters' interests and endeavors. She could always be counted on to be there when she was needed. Her grandson, Joe Rice, was the light of her life.

She cared for him while his parents worked until he started school. She was instrumental in forming his character, for which we are all grateful.

We want to thank her friend, Vic Huston, for his constant care and assistance, and her 24/7 care team, Linda Howard, Lora Lands, Sheena Owens, and Michelle Sharp, along with the Hospice nurses and caretakers who attended to her in her home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at Greenup United Methodist Church, with visitation beginning at 11:00 at the church. Her burial will be at the Brick Union Cemetery in Lloyd, KY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Greenup United Methodist Church, 607 Main St., Greenup, KY. Reed Funeral Home in Greenup, KY has been entrusted with arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.rlrfuneralhome.com.

I am so sorry to hear this. She was a sweet woman. I loved to see her and Ann riding around Greenup on the golfcart.

Freida was my cousin and was an example and inspiration to me. Always had a smile on her face no matter the circumstances. She was such a Godly woman and ministered to the needs of others I know she was ready to meet Jesus and is now in his loving arms. Thank you Freida for your example as a wife, mother, grandmother , cousin and a friend to all.
